Sorting Pivot Table data, as we’ll do in Excel Video 282, is much easier than sorting regular data in Excel. You’re probably aware that if you sort regular data in Excel you have to be very careful to select the entire range of data to sort in order to avoid scrambling your data. Pivot Tables are easier. Excel recognizes Pivot Tables as one unit and you only have to click on one cell to sort data.
Notice that Excel sorts based on the cell I choose. I can sort row labels, column labels, grand totals, and individual columns either in ascending (A-Z) or descending (Z-A) order. It’s very easy to get to the largest and smallest amounts in any column you’d like. While sorting A-Z and Z-A is fast and easy, there are times when you may want to sort in a different order, like physician seniority or the chronological order in which locations were opened.
