The search box gives you filter even more power when you know the trick I’ll share in Excel Video 292. It’s hard to do OR filters in Pivot Tables. It’s easy to get all of the patients from Dr. Rook AND in the North location, but it’s hard to get all of the patients from Dr. Rook OR in the North location. The search box gives you one way to do an OR filter.
Today we’ll look for all patients named Abbott OR Johnston. The trick is to select this first thing to search for (Abbott), then the second thing to search for (Johnston), then check the Add current selection to filter box. By searching for Abbott, then searching for Johnston, and checking that box, Excel will give you patients named Abbott or Johnston. It’s a very helpful feature, and it’s new in Excel 2010.
